Grand National evacuated in 1997
Aintree Racecourse was evacuated at the 150th anniversary of the Grand National when an IRA bomb threat occurred less than an hour before the race was about to start. The first threat happened at approximately 2.49 pm and the second warning occurred three minutes later at 2.52 pm. At 4.14 pm, bomb disposal experts carried out two controlled explosions at the grand national. The BBC TV were escorted off the course prior to the controlled explosions, and the only reporter who was able to broadcast live was BBC Radio Merseyside’s Mike Hughes who used a radio microphone.
